Buying a car doesn't have to be confusing, it doesn't have to be a challenge. It's a process you can get through in a single afternoon if you know what you're doing. Here are a few tips for buying any small or
mid-size cars right off the lot.
Know What You Want
You might not have a specific idea in mind, and in fact, being flexible isn't a bad idea, but you should have a clear idea of the kind of car you're hoping to buy well before you step out and head to the lot. Clearly, each brand of car maker is known for something in particular, and if you're buying a new car, you're likely going to be buying it from one of their lots.
For instance, Mitsubishi and Ford are known for reliable, high powered trucks and
mid-sized cars, while Hyundai and Honda are known for safe, efficient vehicles. Having an idea in mind right up front will prevent you from getting razzled and dazzled into buying something you don't really need.
New Cars or Used Cars?
New cars have their advantages. They're a lot of fun to drive, they run smooth as nobody else has handled them before, and they have all the latest safety features. Not to mention, they make cars more efficient every single year, so the newest car you can find will probably be the one that gets the best mileage.
Used cars have their advantages too, though. For starters, they're a lot cheaper. A car that's just a few years old can sometimes be found for around half the price of the newer model. You also have a wider variety to select from. You can ride a classic or a
new car, you can buy a Delorean if you want, or any other model of car that's long extinct. Insuring used cars can often be easier, too.
When Buying Used Vehicles, Bring a Friend
Whenever you buy a used car, it's a good idea to bring a friend who happens to be knowledgeable about cars. They can often take a look under the hood and spot obvious problems, or even run the engine for a minute and identify the causes of various sounds. In any event, they can tell you whether or not the car is actually worth the sticker price. This can be enormously helpful if you're not a big motor head yourself.
The bottom line is that you need a good deal on a good car. Whether that means buying used or new is up to you.
